What in the world is
a speed index?
A speed category, or
index, on a racing mule is based on racing performance. In official racing
programs, a mule's speed index is listed directly after the mule's name,
e.g., Black Ruby (98). Mules run their first races at the index of 61 and
under. Thereafter, the speed index is the average of their next five races.
Upon reaching seven races, the times for their fastest race and slowest
race are discarded and times for the other five races are averaged to arrive
at the "speed index." The speed index chart is updated at the end of each
fair race meet.
